Corona, E. Armour L.(2007) Providing Support for English Language Learner Services Library Media Connection 25 (6) 34-37.
English Language Learners is the largest growing group in schools, every year 5.4 million students are enrolled in US schools. Helping ELL is extremely important because even though some students might conversational English the may not have mastered academic English. Librarians could help these students by providing ELL teachers with the curriculum which the students will need. Students will also benefit greatly if they are taught in their native language, which in order for this to happen librarians need to buy books and textbooks in their native languages. Another way librarians could help is by purchasing material which focuses on developing vocabulary and learning strategies. Buying books is not the only way librarians could help they may also help ELL students by organizing picture collections, collaborate with ELL and mainstream teachers to obtain topics. One of the main ways which a librarian may help ELL students is by buying dictionaries and thesaurus which in turn will allow students the ability for higher level thinking skills when working on their assignments.
